Confirmed SafetyThe oral safety of many lactic acid bacteria strains has been accepted after a long history of use and exposure in traditional foods.50 These indigenous lactic acid bacteria are thought to be both safe and beneficial for human health and, therefore, toxicity studies have not been required. In any case, acute toxicity tests conducted in mice given from 6-7 X 1012 bacteria/kg body weight for 10 days revealed neither death nor toxicity to the rodents and their growth was not effected51. Similar results were confirmed in rats given 1.8-2.0 X 1012 bacteria/kg body weight51. Oral subacute toxicity tests in rats consuming from 1.5 x 1011 to 2.1 x 1011 of L. acidophilus for 40 consecutive days revealed no death nor toxic symptoms52. Clinical studies conducted on nearly 300 subjects revealed no side effects in subjects taking Wakunaga Probiotics3,5,8. Many major hospitals in Japan, and other
countries, have used L. acidophilus for more than a quarter of a century,
especially to treat intestinal disorders including diarrhea, constipation and
other symptoms related to heavy antibiotic usage. The strains of bacteria
in Wakunaga's Probioitics are classified and approved by Japanese Health and
Welfare Ministry as a drug. Therefore, its safety and efficacy is both
officially and nationally proven. |
